5 ways honest mobile helps you to be more sustainable with your mobile phone

Dec 12, 2019

We frequently get asked how Honest Mobile is more ethical than other mobile networks. This is a really great and important question. We’re glad you asked!

Being ethical is important to us and increasingly important to our customers. People are becoming more aware of the impact their decisions have on the planet. They want to make more ethical and sustainable choices.

It’s virtually impossible to live a completely ethical life – everything we do has some kind of impact – but you can still take steps to reduce your impact on the environment. This is something we feel passionately about. And if you’re reading this, you probably do too! We want to reduce our impact on the planet and give back, and here’s how we do that:

1. We Have Pending B-corp Certification

What is B-corp certification, we hear you ask? It’s an acknowledgement that a business meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

Simply put, B-corps help to build a more sustainable economy. To be eligible for B-corp Certification a business needs to have been in operation for at least 12 months. As we are a young business, we are currently Pending B-Corp Certification. But, it’s not long now until we’ll be fully certified! Even as a Pending B-corp business we use our profits and growth to achieve a positive impact for employees, communities and the environment.

In practice, this means we’ve legally changed our Articles of Association (our constitution as a business) to force us to consider the planet, our people and our customers in all our decisions, rather than just profit. It means our team is well looked after, we look out for our customers and we try our best to minimise our impact on the planet. All our packaging is recycled and we avoid the use of plastic where we can. We’re also looking into recycled plastic or alternative materials for our SIM card production too. We’re always looking to improve though, so if you have ideas about how we could be better, let us know!

2. We’re a Member of 1% for the Planet

It’s no secret that we want to use our business as a force for good. When you join Honest Mobile you’re giving back to this beautiful place we call home.

As a proud member of 1% for the Planet, we give 1% of our sales to highly vetted environmental nonprofit organisations to help build a better future for our planet. These organisations deal with issues from climate change and pollution to wildlife and land conservation.

Whilst 1% may not sound like much, it’s a considerable slice of a company’s potential profit. Unfortunately, there are only around 2,000 businesses around the world currently doing this. Just imagine what good we could do if every single business contributed.

3. We Reward Customers for Making Ethical Choices

Our Lifetime Loyalty Discount gives you money off your bill each month, up to a maximum of 30%. This is designed to reward you for your commitment to choosing a more ethical and sustainable mobile network. Plus, as you may have noticed, we like to give back.

4. More Masts, More Coverage

We piggyback off existing masts, and there’s a very good reason for this. There are already plenty of masts in existence across the UK. We don’t need to impact the planet by unnecessarily building more infrastructure. Instead of this, we negotiate to get access to the existing ones. So, if we use existing masts, how is Honest Mobile any different other mobile networks?

There are four mobile networks in the UK with their own masts (Three, EE, O2 and Vodafone). All other mobile networks have agreements in place which lets them access some of these masts. For example, GiffGaff uses O2 masts and VOXI uses Vodafone masts.

At Honest Mobile our primary network is Three, which has won awards for Best Network for Data (TechRadar 2018) and UK’s most reliable network (YouGov 2016).

However, once you activate Smart Signal in the Honest Mobile app, you don’t just get access to our primary network. You also get access to the O2 and EE masts, opening you up to a whole new world of connectivity.

More masts mean better coverage, and we give you access to more masts than any other single UK mobile network. This is perfect for those in poor signal areas, for people who find their signal drops in and out through the day, and for those who need to be connected 24/7.

5. Refurbished handsets

One of our goals for 2020 is to be able to offer our customers refurbished phones directly. But, just like a good cup of tea takes time to brew to perfection, we’re taking our time to perfect this service for you. We promise you’ll be the first to know as soon as it’s available.

Until then, you can still make sustainable choices by opting for a refurbished handset next time you need a new phone. We buy our refurbished handsets from Envirofone.

An alternative approach is to rent a new phone from a company like Raylo who provide you a brand new phone and then look after its refurbishment or recycling once you’ve finished with it.

Want to do that little bit more? You can also recycle your old phone here.
