At Honest, we’re always looking for ways to be more sustainable.
We know that it’s the small changes we all make that add up to make a big difference.
As a mobile network we’ve been exploring how we can make our SIMs greener.
We already capture twice the carbon created across their lifespan, and last year we made them half the size to reduce their footprint.
Now we’ve gone one step further.
We’d like you to meet our new recycled SIMs – made from 100% post consumer recycled plastic.

what is post consumer recycled plastic?
Post-consumer recycled plastic is made from things you’d put in your recycling bin, like plastic bottles and empty yogurt pots. They’re melted down and turned into new exciting things. Like Honest Mobile SIMs.
Our new SIMs are the same quality, but have a significantly lower environmental impact.
That’s because post consumer recycled plastic:
- reduces greenhouse gas emissions
- stops plastic going to landfills
- conserves materials
- cuts out incineration
does post consumer recycled plastic reduce greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes! Creating SIMs from recycled plastic uses less energy than making plastic from scratch.
When we use recycled plastics to make new products, we can reduce energy usage by 66%!
why we need to stop plastic going to landfill?
Landfill sites are pretty much a disaster for both people and the planet.
Landfill means habitat loss for animals and wildlife, and toxins leaking into the soil and polluting ponds, plants and human water supplies.
Fires are also common because of toxic gases, destroying habitats.
As if that’s not bad enough the air around landfill sites has been shown to negative impacts on public health.

An alternative option is incineration. This releases CO2 and toxins into the air, wreaking havoc on the planet and public health. Incineration has even been linked to cancer and respiratory diseases. Definitely something we need to avoid.
what else are we doing to be a sustainable business?
CARBON NEGATIVE
At Honest we remove double the CO2 created across the entire lifespan of your phone.
Everything from the manufacture of your phone, to your daily use and charging. We measure the carbon footprint and remove double the carbon from the atmosphere.
We do this using innovative carbon capture technologies, Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Biochar and by planting trees.
B CORP
We’re a Certified B Corp.
That means we’re legally committed to consider people and planet in every decision we make. We’d do it any way, but it’s nice for you to know it’s more than just something we’re saying.
1% FOR THE PLANET
We’re a member of 1% for the Planet. That means 1% of your monthly bill goes to environmental initiatives.
We’re working with TreeSisters to plant one million trees. Their tree planting projects focus on community building, women’s empowerment and promoting biodiversity.
As an Honest member you can opt to pay £1 extra a month to plant two extra trees in the Honest Forest, and be in with a chance of winning a free month with Honest.
what’s next in Honest’s sustainability journey?
Our next step is to get rid of SIMs altogether!
We’ll be rolling out Honest eSIMs later this year. So make sure you’re following us on social media or signed up to our newsletter below to be the first to know when they’re available.
